How to choose the best Food Ingredients
1. Be aware of these unregulated and deceptive marketing terms:
- All natural
- Spray free
- Therapeutic grade
- CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®
- Pure and natural
- Genuine
- Medical grade
Certified Organic is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or EUregulated term. Certified Organic essential oils, herbs, and foods are produced without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. Simply put: your USDA OR EU Certified Organic products are Non-GMO and are not directly sprayed with harmful pesticides.
2. Know your Latin plant names. They matter.
Did you know the Lavandula family (lavender) contains approximately 30 different species and the chemical composition of each species is different?
For example:
- Lavandula angustifolia (Mill.), known as [true lavender," is famous for its soothing and sedative qualities.
- Lavandula latifolia (Medik.), known as [spike lavender," is very harsh. It`s not typically used in aromatherapy, but it is sometimes used in commercial bath products.
- Lavandula intermedia (Emeric ex Loisel.) essential oil, known as [lavandin," is more of a stimulant than a sedative due to its 1,8 cineole and camphor content.
It`s not enough to just purchase organic. For instance, sandalwood Santalum album (L.) essential oil is typically sourced from wild trees, but due to overharvesting and very little organized replanting, S. album is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
