Bayer takes the first step of the layoff plan
Bayer will close its operations at Robinson Campus in Pittsburgh, PA.
In the next two years, the German-based company will implement a shutdown plan, and about 600 workers will be unemployed.
Bayer said in a statement: "With the completion of the acquisition of Monsanto last year, our business in the United States has doubled in size, with sales exceeding $16 billion. Currently, we have 20 in 300 locations across the country. More than 10,000 employees. In order to integrate the company and significantly improve production efficiency and profitability, Bayer announced in November 2018 that it will reduce 12,000 jobs worldwide by 2021."
Bayer plans to "integrate management functions to better support the St. Louis-based agricultural business and the medical business based in Wupani, New Jersey."
The first step was to close Pennsylvania's administrative site, with 569 jobs and 96 contractors affected. The positions that have been cut include positions in finance, accounting, law and technology. Bayer said in a statement that the closure will be carried out "in a thoughtful and orderly manner".
According to the Associated Press, Pittsburgh has been home to Bayer's North American headquarters for many years, and the headquarters moved to New Jersey in 2012.
Bayer completed the acquisition of Monsanto in June 2018. At the time, Monsanto’s shareholders received $128 per share.
