Mayo Clinic launches a startup: developing new drugs with artificial intelligence
Recently, the Mayo Clinic and nference announced the launch of a start-up company that will combine clinical expertise and artificial intelligence (AI) to advance drug development. The company, called Qrativ (pronounced cure-a-tiv), will combine nference's AI-based knowledge integration platform with Mayo Clinic's world-renowned medical expertise and clinical data. In the A round of financing, Matrix Capital Management, Matrix Partners and Mayo Clinic provided support to Qrativ for $8.3 million. Qrativ seeks to discover and develop disease therapies with unmet medical needs. Currently, its initial focus will be on rare diseases and highly targeted patient populations.
Nference's mission with the Mayo Clinic is to use its artificial intelligence software platform, nferX, to massively integrate biomedical knowledge that is experiencing exponential growth. nferX uses advanced neural networks (shallow and deep learning models) to extract knowledge from market, scientific, and regulatory literature in real time, enabling R&D, strategy, and operations in the life science ecosystem. The long-term goal of the nferX platform is to become the connecting hub of so-called “information islands†in the healthcare field. Founded by Dr. Murali Aravamudan and Dr. Venky Soundararajan, nference is owned by a team of entrepreneurs from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard Medical School.

Qrativ combines nference's knowledge integration platform with the Mayo Clinic's medical expertise to achieve systemic drug treatment and development. From the early stages of drug development, Qrativ's partners can easily use the company's drug treatment platform Darwin. Ai looks for all possible uses of drug candidates, including identifying potential rare disease indications and finding subgroups of patients that may be most effective for a given candidate. Through these partnerships, Qrativ is committed to maximizing the potential of each patient to treat as many patients and diseases as possible.
