Japanese Institute of Physics and Chemistry abandoned copying of STAP cells
Release date: 2014-12-24
A research team in Japan announced in Tokyo on December 19 that it has failed to reproduce new and convenient methods for generating pluripotent stem cells after testing with the top experts on the "breakthrough method" published by Nature. The researcher Xiao Baofang Haruko also resigned from the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB).
After eight months of hard work, "We failed to confirm the STAP cell phenomenon." The developmental biologist Shinichi Aizawa, who led the verification of the incident, called the "stimulus-triggered pluripotency acquisition" at the press conference (STAP). The method is stated in a statement.
“I am still confused about the results of the experiment.†Xiao Baofang Qingzi wrote in an open letter to the press conference. She acknowledged that the regenerative experiment failed to produce satisfactory results, and she accused it of being related to the experiment under intense conditions.
The results of the press conference were not so unexpected. The STAP research team also includes other research institutions in Japan and the Brigham and Women's Hospital affiliated to Harvard University in the United States. The team has issued a statement stating the headlines, claiming that it can be in mammals by simply immersing the somatic cells in an acidic solution. Produce stem cells that can develop into various types of cells. Previous research methods for generating stem cells required complex and challenging experimental techniques. The research method was published in the journal Nature and Literature on January 29 this year.
A few weeks later, the technology blog immediately identified the problematic image. Soon, researchers around the world reported that the relevant research results could not be reproduced. RIKEN launched a survey and concluded in April that Xiao Baofang Haruko was involved in scientific misconduct. Nature released the published paper in July. Despite the problems of the thesis, Xiao Baofang Haruko and his co-author BWH tissue engineering researcher Charles Vacanti still insist on the authenticity of the STAP phenomenon and constantly adjust the principles they publish.
RIKEN officially decided to re-test according to the method described in the paper. In the August interim report, the verification team reported that it was not possible to produce STAP cells. At the same time, the team invited Xiao Baofang Haruko to participate in the experiment to verify whether the experimental techniques have some details not described in the published papers.
At the press conference, Aizawa said that he could not assert whether Xiao Baofang Haruko still believed in the STAP method, and she herself was somewhat vague at this point. The 31-year-old Xiao Baofang Haruko blamed the "immature timing of the publication and the withdrawal of the paper" on the troubles created by RIKEN and others. "I don't need to apologize," she wrote. A BWH representative said: "At this moment, Dr. Vacanti is not willing to make any comments in the media."
