UK developed a lensless imaging device
Release date: 2009-06-03
Scientists at Cardiff University and Oxford University have jointly developed a lensless imaging device that accelerates disease diagnosis and drug screening. Known as CyMap, this device is a lensless imaging chip that detects multiple particle types in solution. Such devices are expected to be used in hospitals for efficient medical diagnostic systems, physician surgery and laboratory research, such as the detection, quantification and analysis of cultured cells and medical samples, including blood. CyMap also has the potential to accelerate disease diagnosis and drug screening.
It is understood that the project is led by Paul Smith, a professor of cancer biology at Cardiff University. This technology enables "projects" such as cells and pathogens in a sample (which can be illuminated by a simple light source to produce light refraction and interferograms) that can be received by a charge coupled device (a digital camera) and then analyzed by a computer. It can help scientists calculate the number of items in a sample, as well as monitor changes over time, such as position, motion, and cell sorting. This information helps scientists understand cell classification and cell movement – important for some daily treatments (such as wound healing) and for some diseases, including cancer. In the field of diagnostics, CyMap may be developed to monitor bacterial contamination, the presence of other pathogens, or to calculate the number of red and white blood cells in the blood. Another advantage of CyMap is that it can be easily scaled and integrated into a microfluidic system, and it may have other broader research applications.
According to reports, previously, microchip laboratory devices for cell imaging were limited to measuring a small number of parameters and required complex optical systems. CyMap is one of the inventions of the Optical Biochip Alliance, which Smith says means that we can quickly diagnose diseases at the cellular level. Researchers expect CyMap to be developed as a handheld device that can be used and affordable by people working in cancer or other health-related disciplines around the world, not just in well-equipped bioscience laboratories. .
