Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, have developed a new drug that is expected to be used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The drug has shown good results in cell experiments, and relevant animal experiments and human clinical trials are about to begin. This research paper has been published in the British journal Nature and Chemistry.

Jiang Lin, the head of the research team, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency on October 31 that they used a computer analysis software to screen out a drug called ALI6. This drug prevents beta-amyloid from binding to proteins on the surface of brain cells, thereby avoiding brain cell death.

They exposed laboratory cultured mouse brain cells to beta amyloid and subsequently used ALI6 for these cells. The results showed that ALI6 almost completely prevented cell death caused by beta amyloid. This indicates that the drug is expected to be used to treat Alzheimer's disease.

According to reports, the advantages of using ALI6 to treat Alzheimer's disease are obvious. At present, the mechanism of action of many drugs is to prevent the accumulation of beta-amyloid protein to form plaques, but when patients are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, many beta-amyloid plaques have formed and the treatment window has been missed.

Jiang Lin said that ALI6 is not only non-toxic, but also can flow from the blood to the brain, which is a key feature of the treatment of central nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
