Stem cell transplantation can treat type 2 diabetes

Recently, scientists from Canada published their latest research in the international journal Stem Cell Reports. They found that pancreatic precursor cell transplantation has a good effect on the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Combined with diabetes treatment, the treatment effect is more obvious. Studies have shown that treatment based on stem cell technology may be a viable method for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Human embryonic stem cell-induced pancreatic precursor cells can effectively reverse hyperglycemia in an animal model of type I diabetes, but its therapeutic effects on type 2 diabetes have not been reported. The researchers constructed an immunodeficiency model of type 2 diabetes by high-fat-fed SCID-beige mice. The study found that high-fat diet stimulation does not affect pancreatic precursor cells to insulin-secreting pancreatic cells after stem cell transplantation. The process of differentiation and maturation, and this cell treatment method can improve the glucose tolerance of mice that have received stem cell transplantation under high-fat diet, but the therapeutic effect will not appear until after 24 weeks of stem cell transplantation.
Simply relying on stem cell transplantation does not completely improve diet-induced hyperglycemia and obesity. Therefore, the researchers conducted a combination of pancreatic precursor cell transplantation and diabetes treatment for another group of type 2 diabetic mouse models. The combination of three diabetes treatments combined with stem cell transplantation can rapidly improve body weight in mice, and stem cell transplantation combined with sitagliptin or metformin can improve hyperglycemia in mice 12 weeks after transplantation.
This study suggests that treatment based on stem cell technology may be an effective option for the treatment of diabetes, and combined with diabetes treatments will have a better therapeutic effect.
