Sleep monitoring master smart pillow inside reveal

The “measurement” job is happening on many things that you can't even dream about. Recently, Rick Loos, a spine physician in San Diego, Calif., is working on a pillow that measures sleep quality. The startup, Proper Pillow, said the company is looking to develop an innovative pillow product with a built-in sleep monitoring sensor through a fundraising program that can detect the user's sleeping posture, collect and transmit overnight. Data to a smartphone app (App).

According to Proper Pillow's video, Proper Pillow Plus will include a network of pressure sensors and transmit data using Bluetooth ultra-low power. Of course, any sensor network requires ADCs, microcontrollers, and Bluetooth low-power wireless, as well as a power supply. In the video, Proper Pillow founder Rick Loos said that the controller will start storing and transmitting sleep data to the smartphone app when the user chooses. Therefore, it does not need to continuously transfer data, thereby reducing power consumption.

Loos plans to embed electronic components in this smart pillow, and he claims that the product, called Proper Pillow, is designed to correct the spine for better sleep quality. It sounds really good, but I don't care what pillow I use, I am still tired when I wake up. why? Because I don't have enough sleep time, and it's not a habit to get up early. If I have to get up early, I still feel sleepy whether I sleep for a few hours.

When discussing with Dr. Rick Loos which electronic components were intended to be added to the Proper Pillow Plus, as I expected, he said the design would consist of a pressure sensor, an integrated microcontroller and a Bluetooth digital board and a battery. In actual development, Proper Pillow Plus should utilize 9-12 pressure sensors, a microphone, and a temperature probe.

“Proper Pillow Plus will use 3-point redundancy,” Loos said. “You must use three points to properly detect the head and neck.” The audio sensor (microphone) is used to record sounds such as breathing, noise (such as dog barking). ). The temperature sensor will be used to record the ambient temperature so that the user knows that they are waking up because of a temperature change. The pressure sensor is capable of detecting whether the user's sleep posture is sleeping or sleeping sideways. The firmware keeps the hardware in a low-power mode and wakes up only when the pressure changes, helping to maximize power efficiency.

Due to the relatively slow pressure and temperature changes, Proper Pillow Plus does not require high speed digitization. Therefore, the digital device is likely to be embedded in the microcontroller, but a multiplexer and signal conditioning circuit is required on the board. Has the microcontroller ever had enough memory to store all the data so far? Do you need to use external memory? These issues are still unknown. Loos explained that both the electronics and the rechargeable battery will be tucked into the corner of the pillow – which also means that the pillow requires a charging plug and an AC power adapter.

By downloading a smartphone app, you will be able to communicate with your pillow via Bluetooth low energy. The user can also program the electronic circuitry of the pillow to determine when to transfer the data to the phone. What I want to know is, can it transfer data to other mobile phones, tablets, or computers to the computer like Fluke Connect for industrial measurements?
