Character identification

The fruit of winter sunflower is composed of 7-9 pieces of small fruit, which is flat and disc-like, with persistent calyx at the bottom. The fruit is orange or kidney-shaped, with a diameter of 1.5-2mm, and the thinner side of the central depression. The outer surface of the peel is brown-yellow, and the back is relatively smooth. Each side has a concave circle under the valley, and there are radioactive stripes outward from the circle. The seeds are petal kidney-shaped and the seed coat is black to tan. Hard, broken heart-shaped cotyledons, two overlapping folds. Gas micro, astringent.

Microscopic identification

1 The endosperm cells are more commonly seen as polygonal or square-like, with a diameter of 11-35 μm, and the wall is slightly beaded and thickened.

4 Pigment cells are polygonal, rectangular, and red-brown lumps in the cell.

5 The cotyledon epidermal cells are rectangular in shape. The parenchyma cells are polygonal or elliptical and contain pseudocrystals.

5 Threaded catheters are more common, with diameters of 27-33μm, less common in reticulated catheters.
