Efficacy of phacoemulsification combined with intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide for cataract with macular edema

Recently, Xidian Group Hospital ophthalmology researchers published a paper to investigate the efficacy of intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide in cataract patients with macular edema in phacoemulsification. Studies have shown that cataract patients with macular edema combined with intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide in phacoemulsification can effectively improve macular edema, promote vision recovery, and avoid deterioration of the condition. The article was published in the 2015 issue of Shaanxi Medical Journal.
Forty-six eyes of 42 patients with cataract with macular edema were randomly divided into two groups. In the treatment group, 24 eyes underwent phacoemulsification combined with intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide; 22 eyes of the control group underwent phacoemulsification alone. The postoperative visual acuity, macular central retinal thickness and intraocular pressure were compared between the two groups.
At 8 , 24 and 48 weeks after operation, the visual acuity of the treatment group was higher than that of the control group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). The central retinal thickness of the macular area was changed at 1, 8, 24, and 48 weeks after operation. The difference between the thin and the control group was statistically significant. There was no significant difference in the intraocular pressure between the treatment group and the control group (P>0.05).
