Carrying BRCA mutations can significantly increase the risk of multiple cancers in men

Release date: 2018-04-19

According to a recent study published in JAMA Oncology, men with BRCA mutations have a significantly increased risk of developing cancer, especially prostate cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, and breast cancer.

Dr. Roy Mano and his colleagues from the Rabin Medical Center in Israel evaluated 196 men with BRCA (117 BRCA1, 79 BRCA2) mutations between February 2014 and February 2017. They used prostate cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer and skin cancer to screen patients over the age of 40 by using a pre-prepared program.

The researchers found that 17% of patients were diagnosed with a total of 46 cancers. The average age at which a patient first diagnosed cancer was 54 years. Seven patients have multiple cancers - an average of three per person. Prostate cancer is the most common disease (8.6% and 3.8% for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, respectively). The overall probability of malignancy in men with BRCA mutations was significantly higher (17% vs 8%) than in the normal Israeli population. Among them, the risk of prostate cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer increased significantly, while colorectal cancer appeared to be unrelated to BRCA mutation.

"Our preliminary findings suggest that screening for pancreatic cancer and melanoma is significant in addition to recommending screening for prostate and breast cancer according to existing guidelines, but screening for colorectal cancer may not be necessary," the authors conclude.
