Crude oil emulsions often occur in the production and refining of oils. The world's major crude oils are produced in the form of an emulsion. The oil may be extremely finely dispersed in water, in which case the emulsion is an oil-in-water type. Water is called the continuous phase and oil is called the dispersed phase. Conversely, if the oil is the continuous phase and the water is the dispersed phase, the emulsion is referred to as the water-in-oil type.

Each oilfield encounters such problems as the crude oil is mined in the middle and late stages. The content of colloid and asphaltene in the crude oil increases, making the crude oil emulsion more stable. In addition, with the continuous updating of new technologies, a large number of surfactants are used. To drive oil, the composition of crude oil has become more complicated, which poses a greater challenge to crude oil demulsification. Therefore, we are required to continuously study the factors affecting the stability of crude oil emulsion, as well as the mechanism of demulsification, to find a better crude oil demulsifier.

It is generally believed that the demulsification process of the demulsifier needs to undergo oil separation, flocculation, membrane drainage and coalescence. After the demulsifier is added, it diffuses toward the oil-water interface. Since the interfacial activity of the demulsifier is higher than that of the film-forming substance in the crude oil, it can adsorb or partially replace the natural emulsifier adsorbed at the interface at the oil-water interface, and form a film with the crude oil. The material forms a mixed film having a lower strength than the original interface film, causing the interface film to be broken, releasing the water encapsulated in the film, and the water droplets are coalesced to form a large water drop to the bottom, and the oil and water phases are separated to achieve the purpose of demulsification. .

Test 1: Using LUMiReader PSA (Standing Type)

SOP: 60 ° C, 17 h, 1 g

The figure above is a plot of the integrated transmittance of three oil-in-water crude oil emulsions over time; the faster the curve changes (the greater the slope), the worse the stability of the sample. Here, we found that the crude oil emulsion after the addition of the demulsifier was separated.

Sample: Mix the same crude oil emulsion (0/W) with the same amount of 6 different demulsifiers

The top panel is a light transmittance fingerprint of the same crude oil emulsion (0/W) combined with 6 different demulsifiers. The abscissa of the fingerprint map corresponds to the position of the sample tube, the left side is the top of the sample tube, and the right side is the bottom of the sample tube; the ordinate of the fingerprint map corresponds to the transmittance value. With the progress of the experiment, the light transmittance at the bottom of the sample tube became higher, that is, the behavior of the particles floating up. The more "violent" the change in light transmission, the more unstable the sample. Here, we get the result: Sample 4490 is a good demulsifier for the effect.

At present, the compound demulsifier is increasingly affected by low temperature demulsification, low dosage, saving heat energy, rapid demulsification, improving equipment treatment efficiency, expanding the application range of demulsifier to crude oil, and overcoming the weakness of demulsifier professionalism.
